What This Is

Spotify and other services offer AI-curated playlists and recommendations, pushing new music into listeners’ ears every week. The goal of Old Music Wednesday is to counter that by digging into the backlog with 5 songs released anywhere from 1-100 years ago and giving a brief annotation for each one, explaining why it’s special and providing context.

“Beercan” by Beck,

Mellow Gold, 1994

Beck is one of my all-time favorite artists. A gateway to the weirder experimental side of Alt-Rock. “Loser” off this same album is a classic, but I think “Beercan” deserves attention too. A combination of all the elements that make early Beck unique with a groovy beat.

“Lying in the Sun” by The Beths,

Warm Blood - EP, 2018

We never want summer to end. It always feels too short. This song perfectly captures that nostalgic clinging to the sunny beach days and consequential sandy bed sheets, making you miss summers past and excited for the summer to come.

“Zebra” by Cal in Red,

Zebra - Single, 2021

Cal in Red is the Michigan based indie band you didn’t know you wanted this Summer. Zebra is one of their earliest and best tracks. Playful keyboards dance with dreamy guitars, creating youthful care-free Summer landscape.

“Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” by KYLE,

Smyle, 2015

KYLE has made a career of having fun, or at least that’s what it seems like listening to his music. This song is a whirlwind Summer fling with reckless momentum, backed by crisp, punchy synth chords and ground-moving bass. An upbeat fun time for sure.

“Slyd” by !!!,

Thr!!!ler, 2013

If I ever danced in a club, I’d want this song spun. The flirty sampled vocals echo over a deadly addictive bass line. All the instruments feel tactile and real while maintaining a groove and rhythm that could sustain me all night.
